Since the signing of the Agreement between the Royal Statistical Society (RSS) and Hong Kong Statistical Society (HKSS) in August 2001, the professional statistical examinations have been held annually by HKSS in Hong Kong as from the 2002 round of the examination.  The syllabuses, examination papers and the standard for marking examination scripts are all along the same as those of the RSS examinations.  Furthermore, the certificates issued by the HKSS to successful candidates for all levels of the professional examinations (i.e. Ordinary Certificate, Higher Certificate and Graduate Diploma) are endorsed by the RSS and fully recognised by the RSS as of a standard equivalent to those issued by the RSS.

Recently RSS informed HKSS of the decision that RSS will discontinue its professional examinations from September 2017, after a strategy review to take forward the work of RSS in the next five years.  Instead of organising professional examinations, RSS will move to an accreditation model after 2017.

Following the decision of RSS, HKSS will withdraw from offering its professional examinations after the 2017 round of the examination.  While it is understood that RSS is still deliberating the detailed accreditation model, HKSS will follow up with RSS with a view to exploring the feasibility of setting up similar accreditation model in Hong Kong.  Updated information will be posted on HKSS website when available.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. Will a candidate still be able to sit examinations in 2016 and 2017?

Yes. Candidates will be able to register and sit for the HKSS examinations as usual, up to and including the May 2017 session and to complete an HKSS qualification. Candidates are strongly advised to plan to complete their studies towards a qualification by May 2017.

  2. What if a candidate cannot complete all exams by 2017 towards a qualification?

For these candidates, HKSS is exploring feasible options.  Such options include collaborating with RSS to provide individual guidance on transitional routes to a qualification via accredited statistical courses.

  3. Will the qualifications I already hold still be recognised?

The professional qualifications obtained through HKSS examinations in the past will still be recognised by RSS and HKSS against any new standards that are introduced. Those who successfully complete the Graduate Diploma will continue to be eligible for Graduate Statistician status after May 2017.
