Description

To raise the interest of secondary school students in statistics and its application, the Hong Kong Statistical Society and Education Bureau organised the Statistics Creative-writing Competition for Secondary School Students for the first time in 2009.

The Competition attracted about 100 submissions. The submissions covered a wide variety of themes, expressing in words the daily application of statistical concepts or putting statistical concepts into a story in a scientific and objective manner. An adjudication panel, which was led by Dr K.C. CHEUNG and comprised colleagues from mathematical education section of Education Bureau, statistics lecturers from universities and professional statisticians, was set up for the Competition. Having undergone stringent scrutiny by the adjudicators, 9 outstanding entries were selected for receiving the awards finally.

A Prize Presentation Ceremony was held on 12 December 2009. We were honoured to have Mr. H.W. FUNG, JP, Commissioner for Census and Statistics, Dr. K.W. CHEUNG, Principal Assistant Secretary, Education Bureau, and Professor W.K. LI, the University of Hong Kong as officiating guests of the Ceremony. The teams winning the first four prizes were also invited to give presentations on their creative writings/stories and share with the audiences their valuable experience and gains in the course of preparing the submissions. The awarded entries would later be printed in the publication issued by the organisers.
